More diet supplements recalled

Already this year and late last year more than 70 weight loss products have been recalled for containing prescription drugs or other components that could potentially be dangerous and were not listed on the labels.

Now more than 30 more supplements, all produced by Universal ABC Beauty Supply International, Inc. of Brooklyn, have been recalled because they were found to contain sibutramine, an appetite suppressant available only by prescription.

Why sibutramine is a problem

The Food and Drug Administration says sibutramine (sold under the brand name Meridia) should not be taken without a prescription. It can increase blood pressure and heart rate in some people who take it, and could be particularly risky for people with coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias or stroke.

All lots of all of the products mentioned above have been recalled, and consumers who have the pills are not to take them, but to return any unused pills to the place of purchase for a refund. The FDA also reminds consumers that it does not approve weight-loss supplements before they are put on the market or evaluate them for safety or effectiveness.
